Xuanwu Hospital, Capital Medical University, was founded in 1958. It is a large tertiary Grade A comprehensive hospital focusing on neuroscience and geriatric medicine, with cardiovascular and cerebrovascular disease treatment as its main feature, undertaking medical treatment, education, research, prevention, healthcare and rehabilitation tasks. Under the development pattern of "one body, two wings" with the hospital's comprehensive strength as the main body and neuroscience and geriatric medicine as features, all disciplines are developing steadily. Various branches of neuroscience continue to grow: Neurology is a national key discipline and was once the first committee unit of the National Neurology Branch; Neurosurgery and Beijing Cerebrovascular Disease Center are major participating units of national key disciplines; Functional Neurosurgery and Movement Disorder Treatment Center was named "National Achievement Clinical Center" by national authoritative institutions and is the leading team in this field domestically; Beijing Neurology Consultation Center is known as the "first diagnostic institution" in China; Neurointerventional, neuropathology, neurorehabilitation, neuroimaging, neuropharmacology, neurobiochemistry, neurophysiology, gene and cell diagnosis, vascular ultrasound diagnosis and other disciplines are advancing together, condensing into a neuroscience cluster with comprehensive strength in a leading domestic position and attracting attention at home and abroad. The vascular surgery department, led by Professor Wang Zhonggao, founder of Chinese vascular surgery and academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and President Zhang Jian, has become one of the leading teams in this discipline in China. Currently, it has 2 national key disciplines, 1 national key cultivation discipline, 6 national clinical key specialties (projects), and 3 Beijing clinical key specialties. The Beijing Geriatric Medical Research Center and Beijing Geriatric Healthcare and Disease Prevention Center established in this hospital undertake the leading and executive management functions of Beijing's elderly health service system. A geriatric medicine system integrating management, service, medical treatment, research, and education with unique domestic characteristics has been constructed, becoming an important base and distinctive brand for geriatric medicine research that serves as a demonstration internally and an exchange window externally. In 2016, the hospital was awarded the National Clinical Research Center for Geriatric Diseases, focusing on key issues such as prevention and control of major chronic diseases in the elderly, prevention and treatment of geriatric comorbidities, and comprehensive health assessment of the elderly, integrating national resources, conducting basic and clinical application research, promoting the transformation and promotion of biomedical innovative technologies to clinical prevention and treatment, and improving the overall health level of the elderly in China.
