Guangdong Provincial People's Hospital (Guangdong Academy of Medical Sciences) was founded in 1946, with 2 branches, 6 outpatient departments, and 6 research institutes under its jurisdiction, managing 2 grassroots hospitals. Its comprehensive strength ranks among the nation's forefront, with patient sources covering the whole country, deeply trusted by the masses. In 2008, Guangdong Academy of Medical Sciences was restored and operates jointly with Guangdong Provincial People's Hospital. In 2014, it signed cooperation agreements with South China University of Technology to jointly build South China University of Technology School of Medicine, South China University of Technology Life Science Research Institute, and South China University of Technology First Clinical College. The hospital has complete specialties and subspecialties, with 12 national clinical key specialties and 34 Guangdong Province clinical medicine key specialties/disciplines. In the 2017 National Best Hospitals Ranking (Fudan Version), our hospital's comprehensive ranking was 29th, ranking among the forefront of national provincial people's hospitals; 5 specialties ranked in the national top ten: cardiac surgery (3rd nationally), cardiovascular disease (4th nationally), geriatrics (6th nationally), emergency medicine (6th nationally), radiology (9th nationally); specialties nominated for national top ten include thoracic surgery, rheumatology, oncology, and regenerative medicine. Since 1998, our hospital has completed 120 heart transplants and successfully performed the world's first fetal cardiac surgery during delivery and China's first successful fetal cardiac interventional treatment. It has long undertaken cadre healthcare work and is the most important geriatric medicine research and cadre healthcare base in South China. The hospital's overall scientific research strength is strong, with remarkable achievements in landmark scientific research projects. Since the "Twelfth Five-Year Plan," it has won 1 second prize of National Science and Technology Progress Award, 17 Provincial Science and Technology Awards (including 2 first prizes), 1 first prize of Chinese Medical Science and Technology Award, 130 authorized patents, undertaken 627 national and provincial-level scientific research projects, obtained 5 national key R&D plan key special projects and 18 topics, published 1,447 SCI papers with total IF value of 5235.213. It has 4 Guangdong Province key laboratories. Since 2006, it has undertaken 818 clinical trial projects, and in 2018, new national project funding totaled 68.825 million yuan. As a teaching hospital of Guangdong Province higher medical colleges, it undertakes theoretical teaching and internship guidance tasks for multiple colleges including South China University of Technology, Southern Medical University, Sun Yat-sen University, and Shantou University. It is one of the earliest training bases in Guangdong Province to conduct resident physician and general practitioner standardized training, with 27 national resident physician standardized training professional bases. Currently, there are 6 specialist physician training pilot bases, including cardiovascular disease, respiratory and critical care medicine, geriatrics, general surgery, critical care medicine, and neonatal-perinatal medicine. In the past five years, 291 national-level projects have been approved, and 8 appropriate technology promotion projects have been carried out for grassroots hospitals. The hospital's external exchanges and cooperation are very active, successively establishing academic exchange and scientific research cooperation relations with famous medical institutions in the United States Mayo Clinic, Massachusetts General Hospital, as well as Canada, Australia, Israel, Denmark, and other countries and regions. A total of 15 academicians and 84 honorary professors have been hired, greatly promoting the improvement of overall medical, teaching, and research levels.
