Peking University Third Hospital (abbreviated as "PUTH") was built in 1958. It is a hospital directly under the National Health Commission, a comprehensive tertiary Grade A hospital integrating medical treatment, teaching, research, prevention, rehabilitation and healthcare. By the end of 2018, there were 5,157 staff members and 1,891 open beds. The hospital has 36 clinical departments and 10 medical technology departments, with 27 doctoral programs and 1 clinical postdoctoral mobile station. There are 57 doctoral supervisors, 1 academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, 2 academicians of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, 1 National Thousand Talents Plan recipient, 3 National Natural Science Foundation Outstanding Young Scholar Fund recipients, 1 Ministry of Science and Technology "973" Chief Scientist, 2 Ministry of Education "Changjiang Scholars Distinguished Professor," 2 selected for the national "New Century Hundred-Thousand-Ten Thousand Talents Project," 1 Young Thousand Talents Plan recipient, 4 National Natural Science Foundation Excellent Young Scholar Fund recipients, and 10 Ministry of Health Outstanding Contribution Experts. PUTH's spinal surgery is the strongest discipline in China. The Reproductive Medicine Center's treatment methods are world-leading and its scale is among the largest in the world. Mainland China's first test-tube baby was born here. The Sports Medicine Research Institute is the earliest established and only designated athlete injury prevention and treatment center by the Chinese Olympic Committee in New China. The ophthalmology department is in the leading domestic ranks in eye trauma, corneal transplantation, cataract and glaucoma; the gastroenterology department is at the forefront domestically in ulcer disease pathogenesis research and treatment, early gastric cancer diagnosis and treatment; the cardiovascular medicine department has outstanding achievements in coronary heart disease interventional therapy, cardiac patient rehabilitation treatment, and coordinated development of cardiovascular clinical and basic research; plastic surgery and occupational disease departments are clinical specialty disciplines established earliest in China.
